Hello all, I thought that I would go ahead and introduce one of my cars that I've been working on since 2007-ish. Until recently, everything was going well, but I decided to take the car in a route that moreso promotes what I do with it - HPDE and roadcourse tracking.

The car is a 1997 Toyota Supra Turbo, factory black/black 6-speed. This is my third Supra, along with a 1994, and another 1997. It's been a continuous relationship since 2002, and I don't see me parting ways with this one, as it's *the one* that always mattered to me the most (hence why the 1994, and especially the other 1997, were sold).

The car started out as a T6 car - GT47-80R, on a Virtual Works manifold, with a monster fuel system and an RPS Carbon/Carbon clutch. I had the intentions of doing the longblock to compliment the rest of the car, but put it on hold for a while. The fuel system, I did with dual Denso 255's, a Sound Performance rail, Precision 1600CCs, and -8 lines front to back, while keeping the stock return line. The driveline was comprised of me installing an RPS (old turboclutch.com setup) Carbon, and a new flywheel (RPS lightened). After that, it was another Greddy 4-row (that I've used on all of my cars, since it seems to support alot of power, keeps response decent, and is all but impervious to heat-soak.

Enough talk, I'll provide some pictures, and some timelines:

Calhoun, GA - tuning the car on the T6 setup on a DynoDynamics. Car did well - 832WHP on a stock longblock, but was having trouble up top (no enough cam, not enough ignition).

Some other shots of 2006-2007... This was in-between my selling my 1994 car, while owning this one. Some parts made it over from my 1994 Supra, others were just bought new (taking the car in a different direction)...

On to the goods... The car was fun, but I got tired of feeling like I had to row through the gears and keep the revs sky-high, in order to make the car go anywhere, fast. Out with that, and in with a 78GTS and a retune. The car also got another set of coilovers, new brakes (again), and some other little additions, in order to make it more streetable.

After running the car on the track and street, in the 78GTS, making 541WHP on pump gas, I ended up going, yet again, to another turbo. This time, down (again), to a 67DBB, water-cooled, as the car was seeing more and more track time, and less street time (and heat-management was of the utmost importance). This is the current turbo on the car, right now, but alot more changed, after that.

Now, things were really starting to change. I switched to running Hoosier Comps, exclusively, in 295 all the way around. The car was super-balanced, and held grip through the corners, enough to make someone sick. The brakes were overtaxed, even with running quality rotors and Hawk Race Compound pads. The next round of mods ended up being the following:

-Fluidyne radiator, with pressurized resevoir (sealed), to facilitate expansion of the coolant system, but not to allow any cavitation.
-TRD 160* thermostat
-Setrab 16-Row Oil Cooler
-B&M 20-Row transmission cooler (used for power steering, instead)
-Carbotech XP14 front, and XP12 rear, with DBA (Disc Brakes Australia) rotors, slotted
-Brake ducting and an aero tray, underneath

And, the most significant aspect - a built 3 liter, with a built head:

Custom, ceramic coated chambers and valve faces

Ceramic and teflon-coated JE's, at around an 8.8:1 CR

Alot of powdercoating, and heat-coating

High grade stainless - this isn't Home Depot junk. Locking, to insure secure operation under many heat cycles.

Getting there...

All rubber/plastic lines were replaced with stainless, bent-tubing and hard-lined. This is in order to insure utmost reliability on the track, and under severe heat-conditions. The engine bay of this car reaches, in excess, of 290* during a 30-minute session, so this kind of reliability is paramount.

As it sits, now, the car is almost finished. It will basically look the same, on the outside, yet will be completely different, once attention has been paid under the seams.

Here is a photo, after I dropped the engine/driveline back into it, and started it/tuned it/drove it around, then washed it. The front bumper with diffuser, headlights, and little odds and ins will be back on the car this coming weekend. Thanks for looking!

Seriously impressive stuff. I, personally, like the Advans better than the Works, but since this Car is obviously more about performance than looks, who cares :)

Thankyou for all of the kind comments - the car has definitely put my patience to a test, though, throughout the years. My last car, that I had when I also had first purchased this one, was very straightline-oriented, which made it somewhat unpleasurable to drive/cruise around. This car is exactly the opposite (and, makes more horsepower, is more reliable, and is honestly 10X the car that the others, were). Retaining a factory-configuration was important to me, and this is why the car has a radio/leather/stock interior, and air conditioning.

As for an LS-swap - trust me - I'd love to do something like that... the iron-block, inline-6 setup is 100% solid, but to do a hybrid of sorts, would really make some of the purists roll over and die. (this is coming from a purist, too - I'm sure that it'd be a ton of fun, because I'm a bit of an antagonist).

Here is a track video - hope that you all enjoy. This is in "R" class (Advanced), from a couple of years ago. At the time, the car was running a stock block, but built head with HKS 264's, all cooling mods, and heavily weighted down with safety gear. Wet, with driver, the car is about ~3950lbs in this video. Tires are worn Hoosier runoffs that had seen 3 previous track days on a Porsche, and brakes were Carbotech XP14/12s from last season. I started first in the field, temps were around 80*, and it was muggy as hell. The car was set on 15lbs of boost, making around 470WHP, to keep temps down and wear/tear to a minimum, as this was my last track day of the year, before I had some big changes planned/car take-down over the summer.

Enjoy. I wish that I had some footage of others in front/point-by's, etc., but I just went out and ran hard, and didn't have anyone near me, unfortunately.

Track speeds were around 145-155 on the longer straight/banking, 90 on the back straight, and around 30 at the 180* bus-stop. Speed through the corners, under nominal braking was typically ~50-60, with braking off of the front banking at around 100MPH or so. 1 lap of warmup, then driving hard.

Cool video :thumb:

I've always been more of a BMW/Nissan guy, but there's almost no other engine that sounds as cool as the 2J. I just love that noise it makes under hard acceleration.

I also couldn't help but laugh at the last comment of the video :yllol:

^ Thanks. Yeah - that's one of my buddies getting on there, talkin' crap on my YouTube posting. He's got a Mustang with a Whipple on it, so of course he's going to hate on the lowly *little* 6-cylinder.

A lot of purists both with say 240's, RX7's, and even Supra's have lightened up on LS swaps in cars that compete in Motorsports. Any LS engine will make plenty of power, be very durable, be very efficient, and be repaired/built easily and cheaply. Beside what are they complaining for? With more Hybrids there cars value goes up :)

Nah, nothing much more, honestly... The car is up for the winter, and I'm going to be working on a few things while it's in the garage. Building another built shortblock right now, as it sits. The only thing that has changed is that I'm thinking about buying an M3.
