Brand new PS3 just stopped reading discs

It was working fine yesterday, started it up today, put GT5 in, started the game up, and the PS3 started making weird noises like it was struggling to read the disc. After about 5 minutes of this, I hit eject and reset the PS3. Now it won't read any blu-ray discs (games or movies), but reads DVDs just fine.

I'm so pissed, I just bought this fucking thing.

Well, just got off the phone with Sony, and after trying to troubleshoot the problem, they said it needs to be sent away for repair. This has to be a new record, a PS3 dying 18 days after purchase.

I wonder if it was because it was getting tossed around in luggage? Regardless that sucks Alan! Any ETA on how long you'll be without it? If you still have the box take it to Best Buy and say you lost the receipt but want to exchange it.

Well here is the weird thing, after doing a system restore (holding the power button thru 3 beeps) with the chick from Sony on the phone with me, it was able to recognize the disc, but when I started the game, it gave me an error code. When she typed that in she said that based on the error code, it had to be sent back.

After I worked out the details and hung up, I gave it one more try. I threw in KZ3, it recognized the disc, I hit PLAY, and it worked! I was playing for a while, so at that point I was debating calling them back and asking for a refund on the service fee (because I don't have the receipt :(), but after I was done playing, I returned to the XMB and instead of showing the Killzone 3 logo, it showed a disc with a jagged line thru it saying "Corrupted Data" next to it. Something is definitely not right with this PS3, so I plan on still sending it out.


The box will be here in 3-4 days, then it'll be a 7-10 day turn around time after that. I'll keep trying to play it before I send it away though.

Just so you know you may want to back everything up. It seems like they may just replace the disc drive but most people get theirs back with a new HDD.

Just got my PS3 back today, thanks to my little bro. Im restoring my back-up now, dont know if I'll be able to play anything at all tonight, but at least its back!
