Reason why I am asking is because, what was its behavior in the playing time leading up to its death? My PS3 has had an increase in freezing. Almost once a playing session. Its driving me crazy, and Im wondering if its on its last legs.

Good question. Mine freezes every once in a while but not very often. Also the other day it took two tries to get it to read a regular DVD movie. It froze on a black screen and I had to restart it then it took it a minute to read it but it did finally work the second time.

Alan do you have it sitting vertically or horizontally? Mine used to be horizontal but I changed it when we moved. I'm thinking of laying it back down.

My PS3 lays flat. Always has. Its an old 40GB, one of the first waves of 40's that came out I think. Im surprised its lasted this long. I just cant afford a new one right now, there are other things I need to get that are more important.

Well hopefully it hangs in there. As far as being surprised it's lasted this long, mine is also a 40gig and I would be pissed if it didn't make a three year mark. Sony said a ten year shelf life. If my PS1 and PS2 are still going strong there's no reason this one shouldn't. LOL it's bad we spend hundreds of dollars on consumer electronics and don't expect them to last long.

Mine froze more and more often until it died...Christmas morning...as my wife and I were starting to play our new games. Grrrrrr.

The optical drive died. Had to be sent in for replacement. Didn't take long, but I lost saved games and such (which I didn't care about).

i have a launch 60 gb and no problems here

treat it like a pc if it's out of warranty take it apart and vacuum it out especially around the fan and make sure the vents are cleared of any dust as well

When playing MW2, my system freezes when the Infinity Ward logo comes up sometimes.

As well it should. It's trying to tell you something :dunno:

Crazy how a game developer goes from creating the hottest selling game of all time to being on the verge of collapse, all within a month, lol.

That's because Infinity Ward.

Anyways I played Prologue for a few hours the other day but I think I am gonna try to leave my PS3 off as much as possible. I am paranoid about it breaking ever since GT5 got a solid release date.

I worry about my 40GB Fat, but that's why my kids play it. Mine is the 120GB Slim

After I get a screen calibrator (a little more important at the moment), Im putting some money aside just in case my PS3 goes out. I have a feeling it will here soon.

My ps3 has been dead for about a week now. Just borrowed my friends hair drying and am now attempting to fix the issue Macgyver style!!!

That sucks! I think Sony may have planned this. The Slim was supposed to be the regular one but they knew GT5 would sell systems and it wouldn't be out for a few years so they released a worse PS3 first knowing they would break and be out of warranty right before GT5 launched meaning people would rush out and buy another one. It may not be the way of the Samurai but it is the way of the Corporation.

lol I really think Sony DID plan this from the start. My ps2 is still running strong after 8 years but my ps3 somehow takes a $500 shit right when the slims come out...those bastards.....

btw the hair dryer trick works but you have to be patient. I kinda half assed it so my system only stayed on for a few minutes before dying again. At least it actually turns on now though lol.

mine died the other day because of a boot failure and it wouldn't output anything and didn't even seem to recognize the disc drive (blue led didn't do anything)
so i took it all apart dusted it out and still same problem so i took out the HDD deleted its partitions it on my PC (can't reformat because of the modified FAT32 format style not being windows recognizable) then reinserted and immediately it worked again asking for an up to date software version on a flash drive so downloaded that .pup file from Sony and my PS3's been running fast as ever now .. i would recommend reformatting it to anyone i swear the thing is faster now than it was
