So my HP (Vista) PC seems to be p00ped :( I was streaming video to my PS3, went to play another video, but it wouldn't play.

The computer was still on, but it stopped streaming files.

I switched my TV over to PC (both PS3 and PC use my TV) and the display was blank

Couldn't reset the PC via the keyboard, so I turned it off (held down the Power button).

Turned the PC on and once booted/loaded I clicked on START, the BSD appeared for a second or so, then the screen went blank.

Forced shut down again. Started PC, opted for Safe Mode ( :dunno: ), after booting, I tried to open the Task Manager it crashed again.

I started it again and my (Logitech Bluetooth) kb & mouse wouldn't work  So I grabbed a USB (Microsoft) kb plugged it in, and it wont work either (Pressed Start & other keys, but nothing happened)

Forced shut down again, turned on, now nothing is showing up.... not even the HP splash screen. What the hell is going on????

In other words, how fucked is my PC? :(

I'm no PC repair man but simply due to running Vista I'd say its pooooooooooped

however it could be your internal video/sound card

get a new motherboard... sounds fried

if it wont do the splash at the start where it has the options to enter the CMOS then its the motherboard
but then again if it has a expansion video card (not a built in one) it could also be the video card

So I unplugged the power, waited a while (maybe 10 mins), plugged it back in and it fired up (by itself) and went back to normal, like nothing had gone wrong

So I figured I'd back up some files (because why what I do that when my PC is working? ) and a BSD appeared after just a few minutes and my PC crashed again

Maybe the mobo is overheating so it's crashing? :dunno: Oh well, I'll have to have it looked it.

if you enter the cmos you can tune back the frequency of the CPU that will cool it down...
or clean out the inside .. it could be all dusty

Thanks, I will check that out.

On the other hand, if the mobo is cooked, how can I get the data off my hard drive? :dunno:

it doesnt do anything to the harddrive
you can probably just directly swap the motherboard for a after market one that is nearly the same as the one it has

but then again like you said after waiting it worked fine it may not be bad afterall

Thanks man. But, I just had a look at the receipt, turns out it's still under warranty.... so I'm not sure if pulling it apart is a good idea.... I'll talk to HP 2moz then I'll give you a buzz :)

You don't pull it apart to recover files.

And I am afraid of this also. I am overclocking and my CPU gets as hot a 70 degress under full load. NOT GOOD!!! I have a sweet cooler on it but I need to find an even better one.

yeah, sounds to me like either it is overheating, or you have some bad RAM (and your computer is crashing whenever it tries to access the bad RAM sectors - hence crashing when you are doing memory intensive stuff)

either way, sucks.

The temp gauge on mine averages 83 degress and it dont seem to run any slower than the time it boots up. If you say 70's to hott then I just might look into more cooling fans

Flash your bios first. google it for your computer to see how.

Also see about resetting CMOS

I have 9 fans already...

And you hit 83? Your processor won't last very long I don't think.

Dang I'm running 5 fans plus 2 on the power supply. I might looking into running a few more. This PC was build not store bought. If that makes a difference.

Mine was built too, and with a pretty nice case that allows good air flow throughout. Myabe I'll check my temps again seeing as how every fan with adjustable speed I set to high lol.

instead of making another thread i'll post it in here i'm picking up a couple annoying viruses in my anti-virus software. I use webroot antivirus with antispyware. never been attacked like this before and i think it keeps turning off my automatic updates for windows xp. how do i get the automatic updates to stay on. i've gone into security center and im in the services box watching them and when they change i have to turn them back on it's real annoying.

better yet how can i get the viruses out.

ok so it's called Mal/TDSSPack-A and it's in a couple of C:/WINDOWS/System32 is there anyway to stop and get rid of them

what do you mean by post the log

run the scan, don't have it fix anything, and there should be an option when it's done to save what it found, just copy and paste from that file or take a screen shot. Then i can tell you what to have it "Fix", not all things it finds are issues, but its a great tool to find issues that most anti-virus/spyware misses.

anything in bold i recomend letting the program "fix"/remove. Thats personally what i would do. review them and let me know if you have any questions. There are a good amount of other things i would remove as well if it were my PC but where i'm not there to see what you use i didnt recommend as they're harmless and may be used by you.

Damen would be another person on this board who can make sense of this log as well, so if you wanted a second opinion maybe he can chime in as well.

SO I called HP today and told them the symptoms.... they are sending a tech out, with various parts, to fix it in 3-5 business days. :)

I think I might get an extended warranty for this machine now

NP, also when you run your Anti-Virus/Anit-Spyware tyring to get rid of an exsisting issues, disconnect from the net completely, either unplug the ethernet cord out of your PC, or disable your Wireless adapter. A lot of Spyware has hidden files that will re-download themselves. But if you run your scan while off line it prevents it from being able to do so and gives a better chance of everything being removed.

It's FINALLY f'ing fixed :woo: I am so GD happy too. I missed having a 40" monitor :D I also missed the simple simplicities of Vista over Mac OS X.

I don't think I'll put Win7 on this thing though, might wait for it to fizzle out then buy a new tower with W7.

Edit: LOL I totally forgot to mention that is was a bad mobo. Tech came and fitted a new mobo and my system was back to normal, nothing lost :)
