For a show car? As many as possible.
For a good driver? One is good, but they can seriously throw off weight distribution.

In my Civic I had 2 10" subs in a dual bandpass enclosure. I'll never put something that heavy into my car again. It adds so much weight, throws off the weight balance (not that the Civic had much of a weight balance anyways) and I don't need to go deaf before I'm 30. One small sub in a light enclosure will be the most I ever do.

My shop crew Traver have (2) Memphis Dig. Cap (8) Memphis subs, (6) TV's, (4) Memphis amp's in his Civic Hatch (I have pics to prove it)
Me right now I have (2) amp's, (1) Dig. Cap, (2) 15's JL's in my Integra but I'm replacing it with my Memphis Bella 5chnl amp that retail over $1,500 and (1) 12" Memphis double stacker sub that retails for over $1,200 for one, (1) TV, (1) Memphis Dig. Cap.

I have a 2 12" SoloXs in a box that has quick connects, so I can move it between vehicles, or just put it inside for a HTS sub, lol...
I also have an 8SL7 Kicker in my Jeep, I will tell you now, if you can name an 8" sub that pounds as hard as that, I will give you $5.

I have (2) 15s JL's up for sale in a Custom box with black carpet.
My roommate last term is a car audio freak, and I asked him the question of how many is the optimum for maximum sound and he said if you're going for SPL and stuff like that, 4 is the max, whether they be 10's, 12's, 15's, or 18's. Once you do more than 4 you start to get some major cancellation.
I'd say for the average person and for daily driving, 1 or 2 subs is enough depending on the brand and sound you need. JL Audio makes the best subs out there in my opinion, but they are a tad expensive. But as we all know, with anything relating to cars, you get what you pay for.

I have 1 audiobahn AW1206Q or something like that. That is after having 2 AW1200s. I think 1 is better for driving.

if u have speakers with good bass subs really arent needed ...like what was said ealier they were cool in high school after that they kinda are pointless
:wtf2:
No speaker, no matter how good they are, can produce the same low frequency sound of a sub. No use after High School?? How about listening to good quality music? Some people have them for reasons other than the sole purpose of showing off.

:werd: I have been out of high school for 2 and a half years now and I still use my subs....actually, I am saving up so I can upgrade my system. I don't use it for showing off.....well ok, I do every now and then, but I mainly have them so I have good overall sound in my car.

i know i contradicted myself...honestly ive found having a good set of speakers is sometimes better than having subs ive confused my friends with my 6x9s they ask me if my subs are on...i mean dont get me wrong i love subs...i miss subs...but still having a good set of speakers is definately just as nice...but if u want the bump shake and rattle...then sure go for some subs...
