It rained on saturday so most went home early, this one day cruise attracts over 1.5 million people and 40,000 cars. People tend to come in for a week and drive around even though its a one day event, you can see every kind of strange car you can think of. It use to be that if you drove a import of any kind you got booed by the people on the side of the road, these days exotics and the ricers cruise together. The event takes place on the 8 lane 16 mile stretch of Woodward ave. and there are about 10 city's involved.
The big 3 have booths set up showing the new concept cars as well as some of there old collectors pieces. The cops have cracked down and stopped all the burn outs that people use to get away with in previous years, its a $1,000 fine if you get busted doing it.
Other than that anything goes as far as cars that you can drive on the street, there was even a giant Hemi powered big wheel driving down the road followed by a Indy car.

On the way to the event we saw 2 choppers chasing 2 real nascar stock cars on the highway, there was a race at MIS that sunday so they wanted to promote it by letting them run on the freeways. If you have eve driven on 696 near woodward you would know that it has 20ft walls around it for about 10 miles, that made the stock cars sound like fighter jets streaking thru the city.
Now most people do a write up about the hot rods in this event, after all it is a celebration of the 50's era and the cars that ruled in that day.
While I love cars in general I was never a big fan of the hot rod mentality, I mean I am not a 0 to 60 type of guy, and I could care less about how fast a car can run the quarter mile. I do how ever appreciate the passion that people have for there cars, even if they are not my taste. The problem in Detroit has always been the big 3 mentality, most people work for some type of auto related company and are afraid to drive a exotic or import even though they have one parked in the garage. Just one of the reasons why Michigan is well known for there sunday drivers.
So we decided to show you as many of the imports, exotics and unique cars that we could find on the cruise.
We went early on friday to see all the booths get set up, as saturday there was going to be to many people to battle to get a look at the cars.

The Ford booth was depressing as hell, just like there stock these days it was empty and lacking any kind of excitement.
Full of Mustangs that had been made over ten fold to bring some kind of interest to the company, the only exciting thing in there booth was the woody Bronco that a shop teacher had made with his high school students.

No thats not my living room floor.

The M.A.S.H guys got in a bit of trouble with there real machine gun, some guy came up and flashed a Home land security badge and pulled the jeep over to a side ally. The cops showed up and were checking out his gun making sure it didn't have a firing mechanism. They made him cover it back up and put a pad lock on it before they would let him go. The entire time the crowd booed the cops, they started to chant free GI Joe......free GI Joe.

The GM booth was cool, and packed with people that were trying to get a peak at the Transformer cars on display.
The movie was shot in Detroit at old train station that has been abandoned for the past 20 years.

Detroit doesn't have that many F cars, and you have to have some balls to bring yours out to this meet.

Bmw?

The guy who painted this car was on a bad Acid trip at the time, some how they crammed a 350 Chevy engine in the rear.
The car did wheelies when it took off in first gear, but was broken down on the side of the road by the end of the day.

Batmobile
He was shooting tennis balls out the pipes in the rear.

Boat
Some kind of military boat that was giving rides to people for a donation, it was leaking oil and broken down by the end of the day.

This car had every kind of car emblem on it.

In a nut shell that was the woodward dream cruise, or at least our version of it.
The cruise was nothing more than a rolling parking lot of normal every day cars, most of the hot rods had gone home before 2pm due to the over cast skies.
The cruise has become a commercial event more that a weekend of fun for the family.
There are so many mini vans, suvs, pick up trucks, semi tucks, rolling billboards you cant see past them, at every corner there was some one trying to ether promote there product or sell you something. Most of the locals think is should be canceled next year, they even had signs along the road that said say no to woodward 2008. Now I can see why.

Alot of cool cars but it doesn't sound like you had much fun at the event at all. Good write up btw. Although I don't know if I'm glad that I missed it or sad that I missed it. :dunno:

wonder what camera the photographer was using. really nice pics btw, I missed it, but most of my friends told me that it sucked in the way that there were more soccer moms/regular daily commuter cars than any exotic, import, hot rod combined... oh and the guy with the strippers and everything lives almost right next to my aunt house, I think the name of the bus is the booty lounge or something like that hahaha.

The real working Camaro.

That's funny considering it doesn't have a roof! :p Silly Americans cutting corners. When Holden made a convertible Monaro (Marilyn), it had an operational/functional roof!

that one car that you've seen every year but not sure what it is, is a GM proto-type, i heard when the guy wants to get rid of it he has to give it back to GM so they can crush it. sad but true.

I really like the shots... props to Richard. We were planning the trip for this but decided to try to go to the NOPI event to support Dado. That never happened and a 6 hour drive to the D wasn't in us at that point so we went back home. If they have one next year, maybe we will go. We would rather go to Maryland and hang with the crew instead of going to Billboard USA @ Woodward though.
