Damn that sucks. I guess he didn't realize you can't turn the wheel that sharp when you're going that fast.

From the perspective of the instructor...

"On turn-in for T1 he put in the clutch and I believe went down from fourth to third and then second and let out the clutch before I could say anything. As soon as he let the clutch back out the rear end locked up and around the car came. I then found us sliding passenger side first toward the wall and the T1 worker area. At first I thought we were going to miss the wall and if Mr. Xxxxxxxx had moved the wheel slightly with the direction of the spin to bring the nose back around rather than into the spin try and stop it we would have. As it were we hit with a glancing blow and came to a rest a short distance away and on the gore area between the transition of NASCAR 1 and the Road course T1 facing toward the rest of the cars coming through T1 and looking out through the now raised hood of the vehicle.

I restrained Mr. Xxxxxxxx from exiting the vehicle until the corner workers had secured the area with yellow flags (which were out and waving immediately) and that the emergency crew had arrived to act as a roadblock for us with the wrecker. Once they arrived and parked in front of us I allowed Mr. Xxxxxxxx to exit the vehicle.

While waiting in the vehicle for the above to occur I gave the corner workers a “thumbs-up” to indicate that we appeared to be ok and uninjured and started the debrief with Mr. Xxxxxxxx when he asked “what did I do wrong?” I told him that the incident was caused due to his downshifting as he entered T1. He indicated to me that “no one” had told him not to do that. I did not argue with him as that was not the time or place given his current state of mind and agitation but I know that I mentioned it during the station wagon session as this is part of my normal delivery during those sessions and I know that this is a topic of one of the slides during the PowerPoint presentation in the first classroom session. Wow. That has to be such an awkward feeling, sitting in the passenger seat of someone that just wrecked their Viper.

So basically, downshifted from 4th to 2nd. Smooth.

You know else is smooth? Shifting from 5th to 2nd doing 95 mph. I meant to shift to 4th but I fucked up. My wheels were spinning and the engine was redlining like a mofo. oops

no, the problem is that he downshifted as he was entering a turn. Any race instructer will tell you to never do this because its basically the same thing as a clutch kick in drifting and a sure way to get the ass of the car out.

Actually the drifting term is "shift lock"
Clutch kick is the same as just reving and dumping the clutch, used for low powered cars.

either way it looks like he was about to try and drift his way around the corner.

yeah... thats why drift cars use it... im joking. but yeah, its the same thing as having the rear tire completely lock under breaking, ide guess the guy wasnt that comfortable in the car, or aggressivly driving a stick shift car, because he should have come out of the clutch much slower, and then depressed the clutch again, but at the speeds, it has to be reflex, not mind power.

Oh man thats brutal, damn sad to see that beauty get wrecked. He definetely did everything wrong, as the intstructor says, he failed to turn into the skid of car which is the proper way to execute a skid as safely as possible. And, you would think that once you felt the tires lock you from downshifting you would stomp on the clutch, duh.

I remember I almost destroyed my g/f uncle's Camaro pumping 400hp, he let me take it out for a spin after drueling at it everytime he brings it around. So of course once I though I was used to it enough I started hot dogging it, reving it way up and flooring it through all the gears, I was reved way up in 3rd (around the redline) and went to pull it down into fourth. Well turns out I wasn't as used to the car as I though, I pulled it down into second! I heard/felt the nastiest as I let out the clutch so before I even got my foot off the pedal I stomped it back to the floor to disingage the drivetrain knowing that that was the safest thing to do. After checking things out, all was well, so I have off to tear up some more asphalt.
