Nizpro Turbocharging Open Night
by: Luke Oxley
Eleven hundred and sixty three horsepower, yes you heard right! Nizpro Turbocharging has upped the ante with their latest effort in researching and developing Ford’s highly popular XR6 6-cylinder turbo engine. Located in Melbourne’s South Eastern suburb of Bayswater, Nizpro is a well-established and highly respected company when it comes to high-end turbocharged performance.
Simon Gishus recently opened his workshop to a select few to witness their latest engine mule getting very angry on their in-house engine dyno. Based on Ford’s 4.0-litre 6-cylinder engine, as factory fitted to the highly acclaimed Falcon XR6, Nizpro has upgrade packages from mild to wild and this one is their wildest! Running on a 50/50 mix of PULP and Avgas fuel, Simon laid down three 1000+hp runs with a final run of 1163hp at 6500rpm, the engine cracking the 1200hp mark earlier in the day. What amazed us was how the guys kept the engine under heavy load for a solid five minutes. It’s not just the power the engine develops, but also the sheer amount of torque available at such low rpm (try 1300+Nm at 4000rpm), you can’t beat cubic capacity! Simon assures us there’s plenty more left in the engine, and we’d imagine that this set-up will make 1500+hp when a higher-grade fuel is introduced.
Having vast experience with 6-cylinder Nissan engines including the RB26DETT as well as the locally popular VL Commodore RB30T series engines, Simon already had a fair idea of what the weak points of the Ford engine would be. Nothing was left to chance, the guys replacing the factory crankshaft with a billet 4340 steel unit and a complete forged bottom end included monster steel end caps. The turbocharger is of custom in-house spec and is mounted on a custom stainless exhaust manifold that we can only describe as a work of art. A MoTeC M800 computer is in place for not only complete engine management, but also for its full data logging capabilities, a vital tool when pushing the performance envelope this far. This engine will be seeing it’s way into Simon’s very own 11-second street driven Ute (currently fitted with the Cobra Stage II kit) along with a built up C9 tranny. A custom 4-link suspension system is already fitted to aid traction.
The big 4-litre wasn’t the only thing on Show though with Tony Spooner’s twin turbocharged 1100hp Chev V8 shi race boat on display. Tony Defelice also had a couple of his toys on show, namely a daily driven twin turbocharged Ferrari F355 (by Nizpro of course) that belts out an incredibly healthy 432kW through its Pirelli P-Zero tyres on just 13psi boost, and all through an internally standard 2.65-litre V8 engine. Tony is also the proud owner of the soon to be completed Keith Black big block equipped Camaro Doorslammer, built by Murray Anderson. Not content with one of these bad boys, Tony has another on the way. And one might ask what he might need a second Doorslammer chassis for? Well to house an all-out turbocharged 4.0-litre Ford engine of course!
“You can’t have a race/street car, it has to be one or the other. This is the only way we’ll ever find out what one of these engines is capable of on the drag strip,” Simon says of his monster XR6 engine. The guys are aiming to run the first 6-second, 6-cylinder pass in Australia and we can’t wait to see that happen.
