View Full Version : OUR TRIP TO SEE THE FERRARI P4/5

This weekend I got to take a personal tour of the ultimate Ferrari - the P4/5. This car is the most insane car that I've ever seen in person! I was invited out by the owner of ThE EC and by Ed (NYSEguy) on TeckEast. I felt very privileged to be invited to this very private event!

Saturday, my friend Jason and I drove up from Baltimore, MD to Long Island, NY in his Z06 where we met up with a bunch of EC guys. There were about 20 cars and about (6) were Challenge Stradales! A very cool bunch of guys.

Left around noon and drove about an hour to CT. to a garage owned by Jim Glickenhaus. He is the owner/designer of the this one-off Ferrari P4/5 built by Pininfarina. Words cannot describe how beautiful this car is. It's a concept car come to life! It looks so much better in person. Definitely looks more proportional than the Enzo. Actually the P4/5 is based on an Enzo's chassis. I believe the Enzo that was used was the last Enzo ever sold and it still had plastic on the seats. The $650,000 Enzo was flown to Italy and taken apart. The whole transformation from drawing to finished product took only a year! Here are some things I learned about the P4/5:

- The cost of the total cost of the car was $4,000,000. There were 6 copies made of each part.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/Teckademics/TeckEast%20pics/GarageP45frontdooropen.jpg

- The sub-frame is completely unique. It allowed the designers to shorten the nose by 4 inches. It makes the car much more drivable on the street - you don't scape the nose. The Enzo needed the 4 inches for crumple zone. Radiator in the P4/5 is placed horizontal in the front and acts also as a crash barrier. There's also more capacity in the radiator. The AC has been supercharged so there's much more air conditioning. The car can run in 100 degrees with the AC on and run practically forever without any problems.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/Teckademics/TeckEast%20pics/GarageP45underhood.jpg

- The computer in the car runs a CAD CAM program. The tablet PC in the car is basically a computer from a F16 jet. The whole car was designed in CAD CAM. Complete mathematical formulas are stored in the car. The car can replicate itself! It has all the math to recreate 100% of the parts in it. You can see the whole car on the PC. You can take apart the car on the PC. You can see how and where the part is made. You can take the whole car apart in only 12 hours!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/Teckademics/TeckEast%20pics/rearedit.jpg

- No visibility out the back. Mr. and Mrs. Glickenhaus were actually scanned into a super computer and the side mirrors are angled so the driver can see completely behind the car - with only 2 mirrors.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/Teckademics/TeckEast%20pics/GarageP45rearcanopy.jpg

- The interior is unique. Controls are rearranged. Seats are custom molded. Seats are actually leather but made to look alcantara. There's even an I-pod connection!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/Teckademics/TeckEast%20pics/GarageP45int-1.jpg

- Basically the same motor used in the Enzo. The internal ducting is completely redone to get more air flow through the oil radiators and more flow to the air box in the engine. The P4/5 makes more horsepower than an Enzo simply because it has more induction. It makes a little more power. No mods were done to the air pollution stuff to keep it legal.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/Teckademics/TeckEast%20pics/GarageP45engine.jpg

- It has a valve in it that switches between lower exhaust and the upper exhaust. Below 3,000 RPM when you're stopped it keeps a pedestrian walking behind you from getting burned. Above 3,000 RPM it shifts upwards. The titanium rear wing actually moves.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/Teckademics/TeckEast%20pics/reartopexhaust.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/Teckademics/TeckEast%20pics/rearloweredit.jpg

- It's faster than an Enzo only because it has a taller axle ratio - slightly taller tires. Top speed is 233 mph vs Enzo's 224. Actually the Enzo would go 233 if it had taller tires but it won't fit under the body. Faster to 60 in 3 secs. The reason because the tires are so wide and it can hook up better than an Enzo. Same size tires that are on the Bugatti Veyron but these aren't run-flats. Run-flats weigh 82kg. Too stiff sidewall, too stiff ride. One wheel is made from block of alloy. During banking testing, the drivers were putting 4,000lbs. of downforce. They put the body into the tires. There's tire marks inside the fenders. They had to stiffing up the springs.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/Teckademics/TeckEast%20pics/GarageP45wheel.jpg

Each headlight costs more than a brand new F430! $500,000 for the set!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/Teckademics/TeckEast%20pics/GarageP45lights.jpg

After our tour of the P4/5 I walked around the garage to check out Mr. Glickenhaus car collection. Only a few of his cars where at this location. The other cars included a real GT40 racecar, an old Mercedes, and a couple cars from the 1940s. He also has a 947 Tipo 166 Spyder Corsa - the oldest Ferrari in existence!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/Teckademics/TeckEast%20pics/GarageGT40.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/Teckademics/TeckEast%20pics/Garageclassic.jpg

We left the garage to head back to Long Island. Much to my surprise, Mr. Glickenhaus drove the P4/5 back with us! This thing looked so futuristic on the highway! The car almost caused 10 accidents by people taking pics with their camera phones. Got some sick HD footage of the car on the highway.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/Teckademics/TeckEast%20pics/restareaedit.jpg

Pulled into the Americana Manhasset shopping complex around 4pm and it was funny to see Mr. Glickenhaus pull the P4/5 into a regular parking space!

Thanks to Ed, Jim Glickenhaus and the rest of the guys from the EC for inviting me to this event. Jason and I had an awesome time!

Damn why do ppl host pictures with anyone other then imageshack. Every DoD firewall blocks imageshack, or atleast they're supposed too.

damn you are lucky, ive always wondered about those EC guys...seems like an amazing group. I followed the p4/5 from when the idea was first out all the way through the build and then when the pictures were finally released and its debut at pebble. amazing stuff.

nice write up, sounds like you had a good time...Personally im not a fan of the car, i think its ugly but its amazing the time/money that went into it....I use to like it but the more and more i saw it the more and more i disliked it, then Steve (The Kid) posted some pics of it when he saw it and that just did it for me, after that i was no longer a fan at all..

Yeah ... but its all good. Like I said, most DoD firewalls block PhotoBucket.

Ok damnit, i'm an idiot. I typed imageshack twice last time. But like I said we block photobucket.

Great writeup Dustin! Wow, I can't believe that he drove it out like that. Thats what I like to see, its great fine and dandy to keep it in a garage as a show piece, but cars are meant to be driven.

Dustin, It was good seeing you again this past weekend. Sorry we didn't get a chance to hang out more but december will be fun. Glad you had a good time up there and wished you could have stayed for the whole weekend. It was definately an interesting time!

As far as the p 4/5 goes, it's something you ahve to see in person to appreciate. Photos can't capture the essence of the car, nor can words. to see the car running down the road with 20 other exotics is a feeling that is unmatched and must be experienced to be believed.

Yup so Bradley's 360 resulted in me splurging! All of them are amazing. The P4/5 is also amazing... but retarded at the same time lol. But hey if you have the money and all it is for is your own pleasure, then why not?

That car is just rediculous! I don't understand why he designed the headlights that way as ya your going to pay a but load for the lens, crazy stepped CF work, a rediculous LED setup and then your standard HID ballast which is no biggy. But ya huge amounts of money could have been saved in the design of it, but ya I don't think that was his objective. I am just jelous!

The car was very well thought out and planned. it's hard to see in the back, but the thing has actual rainlights from Ferrari's f1 car parts bins :icon_eek: :icon_eek:

Actually, it was Jim and his son that were scanned. The seats were molded to their specific bodies, and once done, a laser scanner scanned them while sitting in the seats to measure them for the interior. Everything, from ac and turnsignals, to the mirrors were placed in the car, tailored to thier specs. I think I have a pic somewhere of them being scanned for it somewhere.. will post later.
