New South Wales police have added a shade of green to their “thin blue line” with the addition of a Honda Civic Hybrid for police community work.

The Civic Hybrid is in use with the Crime Management Unit in the southern Sydney suburb of Hurstville, and is used for various community relations tasks, such as safety exhibitions and interviewing victims of crime. Detective-Inspector Mark Galleta said the Civic Hybrid was a fantastic aid for the Crime Management Unit.

“The Civic Hybrid certainly makes our job easier”, he said. “It draws a lot of attention from the public at exhibitions and the response it gets helps us promote our safety messages. We’re pretty impressed with the vehicle too – it’s quite comfortable to drive around in.”

Honda Australia Director Lindsay Smalley said Honda is committed to community safety.

“We’re pleased to be able to help the police with the fuel-efficient Honda Civic Hybrid. Our commitment to the community is strong and can be seen in our HART rider and driver training centres and our regular donations through the Honda Foundation.”

The Civic Hybrid combines a petrol engine with an electric motor to create an Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid system that boosts performance, fuel economy and reduces emissions. The 1.3-litre 4-cylinder i-DSI VTEC ULEV (Ultra Low Emission Vehicle) engine petrol engine produces 63 kW @ 5700 rpm and 119 Nm of torque @ 3300 rpm and – with its low fuel consumption and high torque at low and medium speed ranges – is ideal for an IMA application. Combined with the electric motor it achieves 69 kW @ 5700 rpm and 146 Nm @ 2000 rpm.

The system works by capturing energy during braking or deceleration, and storing it in the battery for later use. The electric motor also assists the engine during acceleration – as the Civic Hybrid accelerates, the stored energy is directed to the high-torque electric motor to supplement the engine’s performance. All of this takes place automatically without additional input from the driver.

The Civic Hybrid retails from $29,990 at all dealerships around Australia.

Check out the model they used here........ :cops:

Maybe, but according to their spec sheets, it will only produce 146 Nm @ 2000 rpm. Not too impressive compared to most newer cars.
