View Full Version : Mazda MX-5 Miata

The MX-5 is Mazda's venerable little roadster, RWD powered by a 1.6 liter engine. Lately I've been wanting a 240 or RX-7, not for the drifting aspect but for the "fun to drive" aspect. I don't like understeering in rain. :)

Anyway, the only people I see driving Miatas are women and older men. However Miatas are also very good at autoX and circuit racing and have pretty large support from the aftermarket.

Do you think a Miata can be modified in a way to make it not seem... :gay:? Prices on 89-92 models aren't too bad, and usually they haven't been driven hard because of their owners (women and old men). I personally haven't seen too many modified ones... But I must say with a colormatched hardtop they don't look too shabby.

I wouldn't buy a Miata... If you're looking for style then. Pretty much, no matter what you do to a Miata, they still end up looking :gay:

Get an MG Migdet and swap the engine with an rx-7 if you want somthing fast, small, suicidal, and cheap (with a little fabrication) ;). I had a midget for a while but sold it when I moved to florida. Even with a stock engine and snow tires that thing would burn out at stoplights and drift around corners  . I actually got air driving over highway bumps at 65 becuase the car was so small. In the rain you go 'under' puddles. Plus, there is somewhat of a racing aftermarket for them (more for spitfires I think). They are fun little cars but very british.

Nothing wrong with Miatas! They whoop up on everyone at the Auto-X and in SSB class. I got mine so that I could take it to the track and not put so much wear and tear on the P5.

I don't think mine looks very "girly" either. Here she is with the stock wheels:

and here I am driving her with the new wheels on:

I'm planning on doing a supercharger next year...when I have more funds! If you really want to be "manly" then do the V8 swap!

The new Elise is smaller than a Miata. But its just a tad bit out of my budget range... Just a tad.

Oh...and I'd spend the extra $$ to get the 94+ up 1.8l Miata with the stiffer chassis...check out Miata.net for everything you need to know about Miatae.

We took ours out to the fairgrounds last night and attempted to get sideways a bit. You really, REALLY have to be driving like an ass to get the back end to step out!! OH well, we managed some 360s and didn't spill my drink so that's good. :champion:

All the Miata needs is more power and that is why there are several Turbo and SC kits out there. There are also 2 local clubs that do a lot more than hang in parking lots and go to shows. And the owners range from18 to 54+ M+F. I know of only 1 gay Miata owner (he's up front about it and not a raging queen.

My 03 is getting an MP62 installed right now.

I beat the mazda speed miata up at Mazda's Rev It Up this year, its a fun little car, but I feel it still should have a solid 200+ horsies. They had a few words to share with me after I drifted around one of the final sweepers. but overall a nice little package

Problem is the 01+ suffer from "Cobra/Lightning rod syndrome". If you rebuild with better rods 200+ is a piece of cake. Track Dog Racing is tossing 250+ on the ground with ease. The Miata in the SCC USCC is putting down 400+ (but boy did he have backup on parts).

With a stock 110 to the wheels, the 170+ of the SC should provide plenty of entertainment. Just not gonna replace the drivetrain on a new car.

Next year is all about the power adder for my baby...this year was all about learning how to drive it on the track! I must admit that even with 93rwhp/94tq (yes! I dyno'd it!) it is still a blast to drive. I'm lucky though, I have a world champ SSB Miata racer right here in my town that helps out with parts & pointers. He even donated RX-8 headlights so that we could custom fabricate HIDs for the Banana.

if your wanting to autox get a crx, or a older civic hatch with a b series swap. that would make you pretty competive as long as you are a decent driver

Fun Boy
10-28-2004, 04:39 PM
ya miatas are pretty bad ass at auto x as well, and since mine is stock excpet for the bars and the seat and harness i dont have to be in the modified class, if i had a civic with a b series it would be in the moded class and thats a lot harder.
plus im a shitty driver

agreed, and i thought as long as you didnt increase the size of the motor, youde be fine. i.e car came stock with a 1.6, you could put a 1.6 in the car and still be in the same class(D16 to a b16)

but miatas do own the autox
