So me and brando and a friend are cruisin back from the cities near us and were din about 70 down this highway when this preppy mamas boy driving his mommies car a i think it was either a golf or a jetta i dont remember anyways he rolls up on us then gooses it and goes by us im sittin in the back of this boat of car and i tell brand oto smoke him...he downshifts into 2nd and rolls up on the kid, we look him and he looks a little suprised that that we pulled up on him and brando hammers it again and we rocket by him like hes standin still......about 10 miles down the road he goes by us on an off ramp....i hate rich white boys who think theyre hot shit.

me cherp (shane), and a friend of ours nate went down to the mall one day after work. we had a lot of fun messin with people and goofin off and then we left to go to BK. so after BK we decided to just go home.

On the way back we were cruizing down the freeway at about 60. when out of the blue this kid comes fly up beside us in his like 92 jetta thinkin hes hot shit. so i drop it into 2nd and hammer it just as he does the same. now keep in mind that i am in my 83 buick lesabre with a full trunk and 3 larger sized people, well me and nate arent that big but we still both wieght like a little over 200 and shane is like almost 300. well we walked him like nothing. so we kept going at about 100 and then a little ways down the road i slow down and all of a sudden the kid comes flyin up on us again . so onece again i completly demolish him, the look on his face was priceless.

Why do people bash on autos being slower than manuals? If an auto is slower than a manual in a straight line race in the exact same car, it's all gearing. If there was a car with a 5 speed manual and the same car with a 5 speed auto and the exact same gear ratios, they'd run damn near identical. Actually, unless the guy driving the manual was damn good the auto would probably win.

that's true, because it's instant, but not only that, a lot of people don't know that autos multiply torque more than manuals. Under hard accelleration in an auto, the stator in the torque converter multiplies torque, sometimes up to like a 3:1, so any power lost through pumping fluid around and using fluid couplings (usually about 20%) is regained because of the stator in the torque converter. The reason autos are usually conceived as slower is because they are usually 3 or 4 speeds and don't have the gearing to accellerate as quick as a manual. But now you got cars comin out with 5 and 6 speed autos are they are the shit. But manual will always be more fun to drive.

They're both turd-boxes, just in diferrent sizes :) The thing about the big ol' turd boxes from back in the day is they will roll on the top end, that 4000+ weight means a whole lot less at 100 mph then it does at 10 mph. Jettas (and a lot of the small econo cars today) accelerate fairly quick, but they run out of gear on the top end.

But hey, at least you had fun right?

lol, you should.......my old SHO is reported to run 14.8 in the 1/4 I got this from the new owner....lol. I don't care FWD monte you drive(exception being the V8) you are going to lose to a manual tranny'd SHO.....and no, the fuel pump wouldn't have helped you.....the SHO drivers know what thier car is capable of and tend to know what other cars can do. If it was close, I have $5 that he was either toying with you, or he was a bad driver...lol. I haven't found a pre-05 monte that could beat my sable outright.....lol. Anyways, VW doesn't mean the guy has money, those with $$$ don't buy VW's...they go for teh audi's....the less wealthy go for VW's.....it is the "People's car" for a reason....lol.

i think your partially wrong there andrew, because, if 4 spds are so great, why are merecedes and BMW going to 6 and 7 speed auto trannies? i know part of it is fuel economy, but there has to be something to it. Im with slaby that maybe the torque curve and the tranny are a bad match in the 500, which is why its slower than ur car.

The problem is since the engine is basically the same, the tuning on the 500 is better, the 500 will jump to a lead in 1st, but everytime it seems to spin worthlessly while my sable pulls away... But as for mercedes goes, thier 4sp autos were pieces of crap(a friend of mine only has trouble with his 92) and thier 4sp's seem to take forever to shift and when they do they just toss it out of the powerband. I think the real reason mercedes are getting quicker are the engine and final drive ratios. Running more gears allows you to run shorter axle ratios and still maintain fuel economy. BMW is doing it for the same reason, although I have yet to see a bmw with a fully auto 6 or 7sp......I know the new m5 has a SMG, but that is only an auto clutch manual.....not a true auto......that is meant for gear multiplication during road racing. The less gears you have is generally better for straight line.....lol, but you really need a manual for road racing....lol
