View Full Version : Prelude vs CRX
I went to the store and got a little "sidetracked".......so some CRX revs at me and theres a bunch of cars in front of us so I just shrug it off.......I keep going slow enough so they catch up and traffic clears up and we go, I pulled like a bus length on him........then we went from a roll a few more times and then from a stand a few times.......every time the Prelude owned......I was giving them a big jump to from a stand because I wasn't launching since my CV boot is fucked and he was launching hard........gave them the thumbs up (two people in the CRX) and said later.......

B series is overrated. A CRX with a B16 I think may have still lost and a B18 CRX would have won, but not entirely burnt him. B16 is super low on torque and B18 still doesn't have enough torque. Those motors don't make power til like 8000 rpms, and you're in that rpm range for about 1/10 the race. Plus those motors up the weight of the CRX around 100-150 lbs respectively. However, stock CRXs are slow as hell. I had a 1991 CRX DX, D15 power, 1.5 liter motor making I think like 93 horsepower and like 80 lb-ft of torque? It was amazingly fun to drive, and I did run side by side with a mid 80's non-turbo supra, only mods to my CRX being no cat, better-than-stock muffler(NOT a fartpipe) and an intake. However, if I were to race my CRX with my Prelude, my Lude would burn the shit out of it. All my friends liked the CRX better than my Lude (they do look cooler) but I could never go back to a CRX without doing a B-series swap cause the Lude is sooo much quicker, and I would hate having no power until I was ringing it out, which is also why I'm not a fan of Vtec. Only mods to my lude are: header, no cat, glass pack where cat used to be, 2 1/4 inch custom exhaust from glass pack exiting through an ebay muffler(not a fartpipe. I used to have a straight pipe from the header back but it was sooo loud I think it actually damaged my hearing and pissed off EVERYONE, I got pulled for it and got a warning so I made it a bit quieter, trying not to sacrifice performance), and an intake. There's also little shit like Bosch platinum +4 plugs and stuff and some power sapping parts have been removed (power steering, etc), but nothing that makes all that big a difference. Now it's being stripped out.
Sorry I'm rambling, I miss my car lol. Nice kills, my Lude should be back in time for my spring college semester, hopefully getting a tranny put in shortly. Nice kill though, I love Ludes and CRXs but Ludes are quicker, expecially with H22s.

actually on the b18 at around 5200 rpm the secondarys open and you make all your power. i never had a complant about lack of power in my gsr. and that is much heaver then a crx.

I'm not saying the B18 isn't powerful, more or less just saying that the B-series motors are over rated I think. It absolutely MUST be strung out to win races against a lot of other motors making similar power. For example, here is a dyno chart for a stock B18:
http://sohc.vtec.net//article_files/10873/dc2dyno.jpg
It makes good horsepower (It's measured in PS, but the HP-PS conversion is only a few numbers difference anyway) in the high RPMs, between about 6000 and 7500 rpms, and it's got a flat torque curve. It looks good, except the max Torque it 15.7 kg-m, which is roughly 114 lb-ft, which is quite horrible. Between 6000 and 7500 rpms you've already lost over 25 horsepower and I'm sure that most transmissions that bolt to the B18 drop to around 5000 rpms on each shift. Every time you shift you're dropped down to 2/3 your claimed power output. If that dyno chart measured torque in lb-ft, it would look more like this (estimated), the red line being the torque curve:
http://img380.imageshack.us/img380/8699/dc2dynolbft4at.jpg
That means that every time you shift, you're already out of your torque curve because torque always crosses HP at 5252 rpms. So because of the high revs and the last of a really solid hp curve after 5252 rpms, you're really racing people with an average of 150 horsepower at the crank rather than 180, because you don't see 180 horsepower until like 7700 rpms.
I'm not bashing the B-series motors one bit, they make great power considering their displacement, but I don't much care for B-series swaps because you can get your hands on an H22 for nearly the same price as a B18, they're not much heavier, have 20 more hp and I think about 30 more lb-ft of torque, and they have a nicer curve ( you only lose half as much power between shifts compared to a B18). The swap isn't much more difficult even in a little CRX because Hasport makes motor mounts for every Honda swap imaginable, you just need a hammer to make a little bit more clearance I think on like 1 wheel well. I'm also not trying to argue, just backing up my reasoning for not being a fan of B-series motors. I really don't like Vtec at all other than for getting good gas mileage while still making good power when you want it. I prefer my power to be there all the time that's why I'm building a B20A5 (my stock 3rd gen Prelude motor) to be a monster of an engine (450 boosted wheel horsepower is my goal) to drop in place of my B21 which is in the car now. I just want to be one of the few to own a genuinely fast Honda with no Vtec whatsoever.

I personally like the "what ifs" "coulda shoulda" arguements becuase they make the threads interesting past the first post. Sometimes they can even be educational.
